CONCEPT

What is the meaning of beauty?

Through my series, I hope to have the viewer question the meaning of beauty through my paintings and photography. I want the viewer to notice every aspect of beauty around them, and what it means to be open and appreciative of oneself.

THE JOURNEY

My emotional battle.

I remember when I was around the age of eight, I was teased for my big lips. Being black in a predominately white school is interesting, no matter how diverse they say your school is. I was picked on for years for "talking white," because I spoke properly. I remember feeling out of place around certain peer groups, because I didn't act "ghetto," or "black" around them. I was strange, because I didn't fit the stereotype. For years, I questioned my purpose, and only recently had I began to accept my "flaws" and start loving myself. This series is inspired by my early complications as a black woman in America.
